Verizon Business has announced the expansion of its Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) that allows enterprises to transform their ethernet local area networks into wide area networks.
The offering is now available to customers in Europe, Asia-Pacific and North America, giving enterprises a platform for managing voice, data and video applications across distributed business locations.
VPLS service combines the simplicity of ethernet and the flexibility of multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) to help organisations reap the benefits of wide area networking from their local area networks, the company claims.
According to Verizon Business,VPLS, a MPLS-based layer 2 virtual private network delivered via Verizon Business’ ethernet platform, is suitable for organisations seeking to link multiple sites in operationally efficient model. It is protocol-independent, supporting both IP and non-IP applications, which allows customers to retain control of their own routing. In addition, VPLS also allows customers to access ethernet services and other data networking services offered by the company.
VPLS allows for prioritisation of applications via multiple classes of services (CoS). It allows organisations to customise prioritisation to ensure that business-critical applications receive the highest priority across the network. It also enables customers to provision their network bandwidth from 1 megabit per second to 1 gigabit per second and beyond, enabling efficient and cost-effective transmission of voice and data traffic, the company said.
