Derby based colo Node4 has invested £2 million into expanding its Nothampton Data Centre amid market demand.

The company said it will expand its existing 360 rack footprint by 900m2 to a total of 760 racks, spread across three data halls.

Opened in 2011, the data centre is located off the M1 corridor and comprises of a total of four data halls in a total commercial floor space of 42,000 sq ft.

To cool down the hub, the company said it will use a hot aisle containment and cool its rooms using adiabatic cooling to achieve a PUE of 1.1.

A hot aisle solution allows the data centre to isolate hot air. An adiabatic system, despite using large amounts of water, evaporates water with a corresponding reduction in temperature.

By using the hot air, the company will be able to blow it over the water, sending cold air into the facility.

According to Node4, the initial build phase is designed to enable a 550KW of IT load.

Rik Williams, head of data centre operations at Node4, said: "Our Northampton site is a core part of our business and it is vital we continue our investment and presence in the region, especially as the Data Centre is just an hour away from London.

"By expanding the site, we reinforce our commitment to provide both local and national businesses with the high quality connectivity, collocation and cloud services they are demanding."

On top of the Northampton data centre, Node4 also owns a 6,500 sq ft site in Derby, a 26,000 sq ft hub in Leeds, and also has a private cage at Equinix’s Slough data centre.
