Facebook has introduced Moments, a new standalone app powered by artificial intelligence (AI) that scans images for faces and matches them to the user’s Facebook friends.

Moments, using facial recognition technology, groups photos according to occasion. It will find users’ friends and allow users to privately synchronise those photos with specific friends.

The app has been created by Facebook‘s Creative Labs, but the technology it uses has been reportedly created by the company’s Artificial Intelligence Research (FAIR) lab which has used other technologies including voice recognition, natural language processing, and detecting faces in other projects.

The social media giant is using FAIR’s research to develop a prototype of a tool that can create a text description from the content of a photo, reported CNN Money.

Previously, Google introduced a similar app, the Photos app, that also used face recognition technology along with image recognition tools to allow users to search photos by keywords.

However, Moments keeps photos synced and lets users search them to find the ones that feature specific friends.
