A scientific study has linked mobile phones to cancer, adding to the long held speculation that the use wireless devices lead to number of health risks.

According to the study published in the Electromagnetic Biology & Medicine journal, a metabolic imbalance caused by radiation from wireless devices like smartphones can be linked to cancer and other neurodegenerative diseases.

It explains that oxidative stress due to radiofrequency radiation (RFR) exposure can cause cancer and minor problems like headache, fatigue and skin irritation, if the device is used for a long period.

The National University for Food Technologies of Ukraine researcher Igor Yakymenko who also co -authored the study, explored experimental data on the metabolic effects of low-intensity radiofrequency radiation (RFR) in living cells for the study.

Yakymenko said."These data are a clear sign of the real risks this kind of radiation poses for human health.

"ROS are often produced in cells due to aggressive environments, and can also be provoked by ordinary wireless radiation."

Yakymenko and other researchers, who came up with the study, have urged users to adopt a precautionary approach in using wireless technologies.

Previously, the International Agency for Research on Cancer found RFR to be a possible carcinogen for humans, but clear molecular mechanisms of such effects were not clearly determined.
