Stockholm-based streaming service provider Spotify is planning to broaden its horizons by adding podcasts to its music-streaming service.
Bloomberg cited sources familiar with the matter as saying that the company is in talks with content providers who could help Spotify launch the new service.
With podcasts, Spotify is likely to compete directly with Apple, which is also reportedly working on a new subscription streaming service dubbed iRadio with Warner Music Group.
The iPhone maker already hosts thousands of radio shows and podcasts on iTunes.
Spotify, presently hosts podcast-like audio content, which includes Spanish audio-lessons and song based programmes, but with the new service the company plans to add more non-music content.
According to reports, the streaming service provider is also planning to introduce a video component, which will allow listeners to toggle to a full video version of the podcast.
The company has not given out details of the plan or the introduction date of the new service.
According to a report published by Triton Digital, nearly 46 million people listen to podcasts on a monthly basis in the US, and the number of listeners has doubled since 2008, reflecting the demand the service has in the US market.
