Cisco Telepresence will enable the professionals in Glasgow, Madrid, New York and Auckland, for the first time, to attend the auditions remotely from their home cities.

Justin Lee, CEO of Southbank Sinfonia, said: “This process represents a world first for the professional music scene and promises to change the way that orchestras recruit new players now and in the future. The reality of a traditional audition process, whereby judges and auditionees have to be in the same room, significantly limits the number of people who can apply.”

Cisco TelePresence delivers real-time, face-to-face interactions between people working at different places, by using visual, audio, and collaboration technologies. These technologies transmit high-definition images and spatial discrete audio.

Musicians in Scotland, Spain, the US and New Zealand can visit their nearest Cisco TelePresence suite to participate in the auditions, while the judging panel will witness their performance at BT Centre in central London.

Phil Smith, vice president and CEO for UK and Ireland at Cisco, said: “We see organisations use Cisco TelePresence to speed decision-making, reduce travel and hire new employees, but this is a first highlighting the capabilities of the technology to deliver both the instrumental range and face-to-face experience for the interviews.”

In September 2008, BT made its Global Video Exchange available for Cisco Telepresence connections between companies. The service enables companies to connect to external business partners that have Cisco TelePresence systems.
