3Com has revealed that Sohu, one of China’s online community destinations, will leverage its H3C architecture to build a new data centre.

Sohu has signed an exclusive network equipment supplier contract with 3Com, after a two-month field test of H3C’s recently launched data centre services portfolio including the S12500 Series core switch line and the S5800 Series 10-gigabit switch series.

3Com said that www.sogou.com, an interactive Chinese search engine launched by Sohu, requires a data centre platform that can support storage of 10 billion web pages; a web page update and rating system; concurrent access to and from many server clusters; and expansion in years ahead. Traditional data centre architecture could not meet these requirements, so Sohu decided to utilise the H3C data centre architecture for its new Internet Data Centre (IDC) equipment room.

Sun Dehe, vice president of the H3C network product line of 3Com, said: “H3C had a long-term plan in mind when it began developing its next-generation data centre solutions for enterprise customers. For example, our unified switching architecture enables users to more easily design future-oriented applications; a characteristic required of Sohu’s data centre.”

The H3C data centre offering incorporated S12508 core switch deployed in the data centre working in tandem with its S7500E multi-service routing switches, S5800 10-gigabit switches and its web-based Intelligent Management Centre (IMC) platform. This bundled offering reportedly provides line-speed transmission of small packets, a buffer to deal with traffic surges resulting from user searches and reloads, and stacking for short- and long-term network expansion.
