EnterpriseDB has announced that Sony Online Entertainment is using the company’s Postgres Plus Advanced Server database to power its new multiplayer online role-playing game, Free Realms.
EnterpriseDB said that its Postgres Plus Advanced Server stores all data related to Free Realms’s real-time operations, including characters’ coordinates, weapons, pets, progression ability, user configurations, and levels.
A principal reason for Sony Online Entertainment’s (SOE’s) original selection of Postgres Plus Advanced Server was the database’s ability to run applications written for its existing third-party proprietary database services at a small fraction of the cost, noted EnterpriseDB. With Free Realms, SOE is also leveraging Postgres Plus Advanced Server’s transaction processing and scaling strengths, added EnterpriseDB.
Anand Rao, director of data services at SOE, said: EnterpriseDB leverages the rock-solid stability and ready scalability of the open source PostgreSQL database to deliver the performance we require at a cost far below proprietary alternatives.
Ed Boyajian, CEO of EnterpriseDBm, said: Since selecting EnterpriseDB three years ago, SOE has been an ideal customer, providing invaluable input on enterprises’ real-world requirements for database compatibility, scalability and performance. We are pleased to provide a key enabling technology for Free Realms, and we’re looking forward to continuing our close working relationship with SOE.
