South Korean telecommunications major SK Telecom has teamed up with Sweden based communication company Ericsson for undertaking joint research on 5G-related technologies.

Both the companies will develop core technologies which will be a standard for next generation 5G technologies and they are planning to demonstrate the technologies at the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics.

The technologies which will be studied include next generation small cell, ultra-wideband, low latency technology that could be used for remote driving, FDD/TDD convergence technology, gigabyte-scale data transmission.

Ericsson vice president and head of Product Area Radio Thomas Norén said, "Korea is clearly leading in the uptake of LTE, in terms of technology and subscriber uptake, and SK Telecom is the largest mobile carrier in their market.

"They are early drivers of technology and we see them as an important partner in defining new opportunities, innovations and requirements for the continued evolution of LTE and towards 5G," Norén said.

SK Telecom senior vice president and head of Network Technology R&D Center Park, Jin-hyo said, "SK Telecom is pleased to work with Ericsson to lead 5G network technology."

"We will continue to lead development of technologies for the era of the next generation network," Jin-hyo said.

Earlier this month, Ericsson claimed that it has achieved 5 Gbps throughput in the 15 GHz frequency band, during live, over-the-air demonstration of pre-standard 5G technology.

During the demonstration in Sweden, the company employed new radio interface concept and advanced Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) technology to achieve the throughput.

Ericsson 5G network includes new antenna technologies with wider bandwidths, higher frequencies and shorter transmission time intervals.

The company is also developing radio base stations built with baseband units and radio units specifically for 5G trials.
