Servers at a London data centre operated by Level 3 were crashed on Sunday due to extreme heat, knocking down music website Last.fm for several hours.

The outside temperature reached 23°C but the temperatures at the Braham Street facility peaked 50°C after one of the chillers malfunctioned due to the afternoon heat. The other chillers were unable to bear the extra strain and failed subsequently. The servers were brought down and restored after several hours.

Last.fm kept its customer up to date but its website was unavailable and those trying to visit it were directed to the error page.

Level 3 said today that the faulty chiller is being repaired. The other four continue to operate at the facility. It said it had informed customers of the problems.
