Following the launch of its cloud computing service, Serverlove, Manchester-based independent server hosting provider Melbourne has invested over £65,000 in the last six months to improve its core network speed.

The company said that video content made up the majority of Internet traffic. The average bandwidth for a corporate website has doubled and video content accounted for 53% of all uploads and downloads last year.

Trend managing director Daniel Keighron-Foster has said that video content is set to revolutionise IT networks.

Keighron-Foster said, "To pre-empt the surge in demand – and mirror what is a clear evolution in website development – we have made a significant investment in our network capacity.

"Twelve months ago, our total outbound capacity was around 4,000 megabits per second (Mbps). We’ve just re-signed contracts to provide a total of 15,000 Mbps of outbound capacity – this equates to around 3000 times more capacity than your average home broadband connection."

The comp-any said that a ‘typical’ website that contains video will have around 20 times more bandwidth usage in comparison to a static (non-video) site.

However, users still expect websites to be quicker than ever.

Keighron-Foster added, "We’re continually updating our network and actively seeking solutions to optimise bandwidth. Video is here to stay – it’s essential that server hosting companies recognise this and respond accordingly."

Melbourne has invested over £50,000 in the new cloud based stand-alone ‘DIY service’, said the company.

Serverlove provides users with a cloud server that can create operating systems in as little as 30 seconds, said the company.
