Sci-Tech Daresbury will receive £30m government funding for the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC)’s super-computing facilities.
£19m has been set aside for the STFC’s Hartree Centre at Daresbury Laboratory and another £11m will go towards developing technology for processing data collected by Square Kilometre Array (SKA), which is claimed to be the world’s largest radio telescope.
The investment will be used to support the development of power efficient computing technologies in order to help energy efficient supercomputer software development.
UK Chancellor, George Osborne, said that Britain is in a position to lead the way in science and technology.
"Projects like the Daresbury development are crucial to boosting the economy and putting the UK at the forefront of the big data revolution," Osborne said.
Langtree group chief executive, John Downes, said: "This funding will help to ensure that the STFC facilities based at Sci-Tech Daresbury remain at the very forefront of research and development – supporting the vision of the site’s joint venture partners to further develop the site as a centre for scientific excellence and innovation."
Sci-Tech Daresbury is a private-public sector joint venture between property company Langtree, the STFC and Halton Borough Council with active partners including the Universities of Lancaster, Liverpool and Manchester.
