Portugal Telecom has selected telecommunications equipment and network offerings provider ZTE to build a D-WDM metro network, throughout Portugal mainland and its islands and ZTE is supplying a full-series of D-WDM products and engineering services.
As a result of rapid subscriber growth at PT in combination with the large-scale deployment of new data services, such as IPTV, and a global trend for fibre in/copper out, PT has increased the support for data services.
In the less densely populated suburbs, existing SDH-based networks have limited capacity, this in combination with long distances between different sites and insufficient fibre resources, makes a network overhaul essential.
Growing bandwidth demand and flat network development have driven PT to build an intelligent, maintainable and reliable D-WDM transport network to face the traffic challenges from new services.
A PT spokesperson said ZTE is PT’s only equipment supplier for new D-WDM. This D-WDM network significantly raises fibre resource use rate, improves network reliability and flexibility and reduces CAPEX and OPEX to meet the demands for PT’s present and future services.
ZTE bearer network product line general manager Fan Xiaobing said the project marks a new phase in an on-going relationship between ZTE and PT.

As the exclusive equipment provider of PT, ZTE offers its full-series of D-WDM products and engineering services. ZTE bearer technology is in use with 514 carriers across about 120 countries. This rollout mirrors similar high-profile market deals including ZTE bearer network products being widely deployed in the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Brazil," said Xiaobing.
