Orange has completed the upgrade of over 760 sites in Northern Ireland and Scotland to its new 3G HSPA (3G+) network, resulting in a 20% improvement in network performance for both voice and data services.
HSPA or High Speed Packet Access enables cellular operators to offer high-speed 3G data and voice services over their GSM technology to mobile phones, laptops and portable devices.
Orange HSPA now ensures “reliable services” over its 3G HSPA network in cities and towns, major roads, rail routes, business parks and conference centres, hotels and airports in Northern Ireland and Scotland.
Orange says that the new upgrade means 3G coverage for over 94% population and over 70% 3G+ coverage across the UK. It aims to provide speeds of up to 7.2Mbps in the top 30 UK cities and 2Mbps for 80% of entire population.
Pete Marsden, vice president of IT & Networks for Orange, said: “We are delighted to announce the new network has gone live in Northern Ireland and Scotland. We are investing heavily in updating and improving our infrastructure to meet our goal of being the best UK network for coverage and reliability.”
Orange claims to have the largest integrated 3G/2.5G network in the UK covering 99% of the population. It is said to invest £1million each working day to enhance performance of over 450 new 2G and 3G sites. In its recent UK-wide survey, independent research agency YouGov has placed Orange on the top in terms of mobile broadband customer satisfaction.
