Oracle has released the new StorageTek Virtual Storage Manager 6 mainframe tape system, which is claimed to deliver twice faster performance than the previous systems.

With a disk scaling capacity to over 640 petabytes, the new solution will manage information and storage resources with automated, policy-driven management that facilitates easy deployment, while streamlining ongoing tape operations for data protection, disaster recovery and archive.

In addition to offering a single point of management for the complete system, the new system will meet the requirements of high growth data storage environments in a dense, energy efficient data centre footprint that assists in lowering total cost of ownership (TCO).

The solution is also capable of running multiple workloads without affecting system performance, and offers flexibility to address multiple enterprise configuration needs that include high performance disk-only, as well as offering single or multi-site support for disaster recovery.

Through deployment of triple parity RAID architecture throughout the system, the new Virtual Storage Manager 6 will reduce the impact of disk rebuilds.
