It said DoCoMo China will focus on providing mobile services for corporate customers through system and network services and import-export of communications devices. Yoshimune Ishii has been appointed general manager of the $4m venture. The company will begin operations by the end of this month after governmental and commercial approvals.
The move follows the company’s announcement last week that it planned to invest in overseas content companies and carriers because the Japanese market has matured. It is also facing increasing competition from smaller carriers such as Softbank and KDDI. In April, its market share dropped below 50%.
Ryuji Yamada, president and chief executive at NTT DoCoMo, said: Asia-Pacific remains DoCoMo’s ‘number one priority’ in terms of investments, followed by the Middle East and Africa. We will also consider companies in Russia and Central Asia.
