Nokia has acquired Dopplr, a privately-held mobile service provider for international travelers, in a move to strengthen its internet services offering. Dopplr has a team of seven people with offices in London and Helsinki.

Both the companies said that the acquisition does not alter the current Dopplr service which is available at their website and on platforms where Dopplr is integrated. Dopplr is available as an iPhone application and is also integrated into social networking platforms such as Twitter and Flickr.

According to Nokia, the acquisition of the Dopplr team, “brings to Nokia’s Services unit unique know-how in creating internet-based communities and showing their journeys, experiences and tastes collectively on the web.”

Dopplr members share personal and business travel plans privately with their networks, and highlight interesting places to stay, eat and explore in cities around the world. Dopplr presents the travel patterns and preferences of the world’s most frequent travellers as a Social Atlas.

A Nokia spokeswoman told Reuters that the price ‘was a fraction’ of the E10-15m mentioned in media reports. However, the financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
