Legent Corp is to extend its mainframe-based network management software to local area networks at the same time as IBM is looking at how to manage local area networks with NetView. Having added LU6.2 capabilities for distributed management functionality, Computer Systems News says, IBM and Novell Inc are now working to link NetView and NetWare environments (CI No 1,626). Legent intends to release a new option for its NetSpy network manager product, and it will report on Token-Ring environments residing on MS-DOS-based local area networks. Later versions of the software will monitor Ethernet and OS/2-based networks. Legent is preparing the way for LANSpy by releasing NetSpy Version 4.0 with a direct interface to IBM’s NetView and System Center Inc’s NetMaster, in addition to providing a communications link between NetSpy hosts. Release 4.0 also enables data centre automation systems to receive and act upon NetSpy performance alerts.
