Twitter users will soon be able to make free 2-minute VoIP calls to other Twitter users, with a new service from Jajah that has just gone into beta.
With the Jajah@call service, qualified Jajah and Twitter account holders can now make phone calls without revealing their number and without needing to know the number of the person they want to call.
They simply send a Twitter message or tweet with ‘@call @username’ where the ‘username’ is the Twitter name of the person to call.
“If that person follows you on Twitter, a free two-minute call, which is the verbal equivalent of a tweet, will be initiated, the company said.
Trevor Healy, CEO of Jajah explained to us that the company had started to target internet-based new media services as part of its growth strategy. It already provides the back-end infrastructure for the Skype-out like Yahoo! Messenger call out service, where it handles the call registration, connection and billing.
Jajah launched in March 2006 with a web-activated calling consumer service and has since partnered with a number of carriers, telcos and technology companies to white label its services and partners with Deutsche Telekom, eHarmony, Plaxo, Jangl, IBM Lotus among others.
The company is headquartered in Mountain View, California and so far has taken $30 million in venture funding from backers that include Sequoia and Intel.
