The technology developed by HP Labs in Palo Alto, California could automatically monitor data center assets using RFID. The upshot is real-time tracking and auditing of servers, networking equipment, server and storage enclosures and other technology, said the researchers.

HP RFID technology could enable better accuracy of inventory, increase security and reduce data center operational and auditing costs, said global director of HP’s RFID program Frank Lanza.

The technology uses RFID readers and tags to monitor the location of individual components within the data center. The sensing infrastructure creates a view of devices throughout the data center, as well historical data related to additions, changes and moves of servers and server-related equipment.

Meijer Inc, a midwestern US retailer with more than 170 grocery and specialty stores, has tested the technology, claimed HP.

Meijer manager of operations and technical support Tim Osbeck said the test exceeded its expectations and was invaluable as we explore new possibilities around RFID.

HP said Meijer was the only HP customer so far to test the technology.
