HP has agreed to buy 112MW of wind power from SunEdison to power all of its data centres in Texas, US.
The 12-year power purchase agreement (PPA) will enable HP to meet its operational greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals by the end of this year, five years earlier than the original schedule of 2020.
HP currently operates five data centres in Texas, with two facilities in Austin and the other three in Houston, Hockley, Plano.
SunEdison will deliver enough energy for all five of HP’s Texas data centres, which collectively cover about 1.5 million square feet.
HP vice president and chief progress officer of corporate affairs Gabi Zedlmayer said: "This agreement represents the latest step we are taking on HP’s journey to reduce our carbon footprint across our entire value chain, while creating a stronger, more resilient company and a sustainable world."
SunEdison executive vice president for Americas and EMEA Paul Gaynor said: "By powering their data centers with renewable energy, HP is taking an important step toward a clean energy future while lowering their operating costs."
HP is the latest tech firm to switch to renewable energy to meet its power requirements after Amazon, Apple, Google and Facebook.
