Some social media accounts belonging to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg have been reportedly hacked,with Zuckerberg’s Twitter and Pinterest pages appearing to have been compromised for a short time on Sunday 5 June.
A Saudi Arabia-based hacker group called Ourmine, which has over 40,000 Twitter followers, has claimed responsibility.
A message posted on his compromised Twitter account read: "Hey we got access to your Twitter & Instagram & Pinterest, we are just testing your security, please direct message us."
The tweet was deleted later by Twitter.
The hacker group also claimed to have gained access to Zuckerberg’s Instagram account, but there was no evidence to confirm these claims.
A representative for Facebook told VentureBeat that Zuckerberg’s Instagram account was not breached.
The source said: "No Facebook systems or accounts were accessed. The affected accounts have been re-secured."
Hackers said that they found Zuckerberg’s account details in the recent LinkedIn data breach. It appears that the Facebook founder may have used the same password across several accounts.
The Ourmine group hacked 200,000 user credentials from the DayZ community forum in February this year. It was also responsible for the large-scale DDoS attacks against various financial institutions in 2015.
It was reported recently that 117 million LinkedIn user emails and passwords stolen four years ago were being sold on the dark web for 5 bitcoins, worth around $2,200.
LinkedIn said that it is taking immediate steps to invalidate the passwords of the accounts impacted and will contact members who had been affected and ask them to reset their passwords.
Popular social media networks MySpace and Tumblr were also hit by a mega breach, with hundreds of millions of hacked accounts reportedly on sale through the darknet.
