Firefox 3.5 has overtaken Internet Explorer 7 as the most widely-used web browser in the world, according to figures released by StatCounter.

The figures reveal that Mozilla’s latest open source browser, Firefox 3.5, now claims a market share of 21.9%, just ahead of IE7 on 21.2%. Microsoft’s latest version of IE, 8, is currently in third on 20.3%.

This, along with IE 6 claiming 13.9% of the market, means that just over half (55.4%) of people use Microsoft’s Internet Explorer to get online. The various versions of Firefox claim about 32% of the market.

Google’s Chrome now claims 5.5% of the Internet browser market, while Apple’s Safari browser claims 3.5% of the market with Opera claiming just over 2%.
