Facebook will build its first data centre outside the US in the Swedish town of Lulea.
This new data centre, which will be a ‘green’ one, is just 100km south of the Arctic Circle, with access to renewable energy and cold climate necessary for keeping the servers cool.
The search engine company said it had looked at more than 100 sites in Europe before zeroing in on Lulea, a small town with 74,000 inhabitants.
Facebook’s director of site operations Tom Furlong said that those servers basically are what allow them to support all of the Facebook products for their users. He added, "It will mostly serve European users and ideally improve performance for them."
It will serve more than 800 million site users, the company added.
