Facebook is working on a new security tool which will help its users in identifying and removing malicious software from their computers.
The social networking firm has partnered with Kaspersky Labs to implement the programme with other online security companies including ESET, F-Secure and Trend Micro.
The tool runs in the background while using Facebook, with users recieving notifications when scans are complete.
It will use a combination of signals that identify infections and then remove the malware from the system.
Facebook security engineer Trevor Pottinger said: "Thanks to the collaboration with these companies, in the past three months we have helped clean up more than two million people’s computers that we detected were infected with malware when they connected to Facebook."
Kaspersky Lab’s Kate Kochetkova said in a separate blog post that Facebook users are often targeted targeted by fake emails, which lead to the downloading of malware.
Kochetkova said: "Facebook is a major aim for phishers: one in five phishing scams targets Facebook notifications. So be vigilant when you receive emails appearing to be from Facebook: as they can be fake. There are lots of Trojans targeting Facebook users as well."
