Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg has revealed that his company has successfully tested its solar powered internet beaming drone in the UK.
Internet.org is a programme by Facebook, which aims to provide internet to the remote corners of the world through solar-powered, internet-beaming aircraft.
Tech Crunch reported that the aircraft is codenamed ‘Aquila’ and has a wingspan comparable with a Boeing 767. However, the aircraft is reportedly lighter than a car and is likely to stay in the air for three months at a time.
The social media giant is reportedly going to provide internet to users residing 60,000-90,000 feet below using lasers, and the drones will maintain communication with each other as well.
Zuckerberg said: "Aircraft like these will help connect the whole world because they can affordably serve the 10% of the world’s population that live in remote communities without existing internet infrastructure."
Facebook is not the only tech giant that has taken up the initiative to provide internet to remote users. Google has also been testing balloons that feature technology to provide internet to users located in the remote corners of the world.
