Equinix has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) for 105 megawatts (MWAC) of solar power with renewable energy operator SunEdison to power its data centres.

Equinix said the purchased energy will be used to power all its 11 hubs across California, US.

By powering its Los Angeles and Silicon Valley hubs with solar power, the firm is increasing its renewable sources footprint from 30% to 43% globally.

SunEdison will be involved in the construction of a 150 MWAC total capacity solar farm expected to be commercially operational in the second half of 2016.

Under the name ‘Mount Signal Solar II’, Equinix said the project is expected to generate 300,000 MWh per year to offset the company’s electrical consumption.

Earlier this year, the colo provider said it intends to power all its 105 data centres located in 33 markets using renewable energy.
