France Telecom has said that increasing usage of data and demand for faster networks could force the industry to hike broadband prices.

Speaking in Paris, France Telecom’s General Secretary Pierre Louette said that while Orange does not intend to increase broadband prices, it was "sure" that the industry would have to hike broadband prices to meet increasing demands for faster networks and larger data allowances, reported The Telegraph.

Louette said the growing consumption of data was mainly due to consumers downloading large amounts of video, playing video games and using video chat online. Increasing use of mobile phones is also contributing to the trend.

"If you look at what customers are doing online, they’re asking for more data and better networks," said Louette.

"That means we need to invest across the industry and if people are using more of a service they will pay more for it."

France has already seen a rise in broadband prices.
