Digital transformation software company BMC has unveiled a discovery and dependency mapping tool to map data centres’ assets including larger sites with over 100,000 servers.
BMC’s Discovery software maps an application from any related piece of information, giving IT organisations visibility to understand how their responsibilities impact the business, and allows linking business applications, infrastructure and software.
It enables discovery, relationship modelling, correlation, visualisation, and root cause analysis across geographically dispersed data centre resources.
With ten million unused servers sitting in data centres worldwide, Discovery lets IT examine storage space, recycle virtual machines, and remove unused hardware and software.
The software appliance creates an inventory of the data centre’s infrastructure, identifying idle or outdated servers that could be back door entry points to threats while also discovering how these threats impact the business, according to BMC.
The company said Discovery has been designed to become the backbone of Digital Enterprises.
By using the software, administrators can map an application based on any piece of information known about it giving an overview of network, storage, applications, server, and other IT functions and how their configuration changes affect the business.
According to the company, Discovery also customises the portal where information is displayed and reports for specific roles and needs across network operations centre (NOC) specialists and subject matter experts.
According to an IDC whitepaper on "The Business Value of BMC Discovery Software," IT asset management should be viewed holistically as an essential component of an effective IT infrastructure, service, and security management program.
In the report is says: "IT organisations can be more responsive to business needs by ensuring the data centre infrastructure supporting digital services is optimised, secure, and in compliance with industry and regulatory mandates."
The BMC Discovery tool is the second generation of BMC’s Atrium Discovery and Dependence Mapping (ADDM) asset management software.
