Cisco has purchased the UK based 3G and long-term evolution (LTE) small-cell technologies provider, Ubiquisys, to strengthen its mobile services portfolio.
The US based networking company has paid about $310m as cash and retention-based incentives to acquire the complete business and operations of Ubiquisys.
According to Cisco, the acquisition strengthens its mobility expertise to offer more intelligent mobile networks.
Ubiquisys’ indoor small-cell technology and software for licensed 3G and LTE spectrum will complement Cisco’s mobility portfolio and Wi-Fi expertise allowing Cisco to offer a comprehensive small-cell offering for service providers, that supports the transition to next-generation radio access networks.
Cisco Mobility Business Group senior vice president and general manager Kelly Ahuja said that the company is doubling down on its small cell business to accelerate strong momentum and growth in the mobility market.
"By acquiring Ubiquisys, we are expanding on our current mobility leadership and our end-to-end product portfolio, which includes integrated, licensed and unlicensed small cell solutions that are tightly coupled with SON, backhaul, and the mobile packet core," Ahuja added.
"For service providers, Ubiquisys supports cost effective coverage and capacity that delivers a differentiated customer experience.
After completion of the acquisition in the fourth quarter of 2013, Ubiquisys will be integrated into the Cisco Mobility Business Group, and employees will be reporting to Partho Mishra, vice president and general manager, Service Provider Small Cell Technology Group.
The Ubiquisys acquisition is expected to complement Cisco’s mobility strategy including the acquisitions of BroadHop and Intucell to strengthen in-house research and developments like service provider Wi-Fi and licensed radio.
