China Telecom has awarded a EUR100m contract to Alcatel-Lucent’s Chinese unit, Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell to expand its broadband access network, bringing services such as IPTV, video-on-demand and voice-over-IP (VoIP) services in the country.
The new contract will see the fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) networks are deployed across China’s 31 provinces, enabling China Telecom to provide high-speed internet services to several households.
As part of the deal, Alcatel-Lucent will supply its 7360 Intelligent Services Access Manager (ISAM) system to China Telecom, supporting GPON as well as EPON broadband technologies.
China Telecom’s Science & Technology Committee director Wei Leping said, "Leveraging Alcatel-Lucent’s leading broadband access portfolio and its extensive experience with large-scale deployments around the world, we are able to provide subscribers with a premium broadband experience."
Alcatel-Lucent Asia-Pacific Region president Rajeev Singh-Molares said the new project focuses on expansion of broadband in China.
"It also demonstrates our strong and growing leadership position in the FTTH market as we help accelerate the availability of superfast broadband throughout China," said Molares.
The expansion of broadband access network is part of China’s ‘Broadband China, Fiber Cities’ plan which was launched in 2011 aiming to bring FTTH coverage to 100 million households and 30 million subscribers by 2015.
