By 2017, according to a report by Juniper Research, about 19% of global mobile banking customers will use the devices for bill payments up from 9% in 2013.

The report found there is a growing user acceptance of ‘push’ mobile banking and a sharp rise in tablet adoption, which will drive increased use.

According to the report banking by tablet users will be higher than mobile handset users, particularly in developed areas where the take up og tablet devices has tradtionally been higher.

The move is another sign of the falling market share of laptops and desktops as tablet devices become increasingly dominant, the report stated.

Juniper Research senior analyst and report author Nitin Bhas said as online payments account for a significant proportion of all bill payments, especially in developed markets, BPP (Bill Presentment and Payment) transactions will migrate from the desktop towards tablet devices.

"Consumers often prefer managing bill payment and transactions via tablet devices compared to smartphones," said Bhas: "However, with banks bundling mobile services within their mobile banking platform and additional momentum from easy to use smartphone apps, mobile phone transactional banking usage will quickly increase."

The report forecasts by 2017, the number of global mobile banking users will exceed 1 billion and represent 15% of global mobile handset users, which will be led by the Far East, China, North America and Western Europe.
