Apple will next week hand over a planning permission to Galway’s City Council to build a data centre in Athenry.
The company expects construction works to "start as soon as possible" and has set 2017 as the target data to open the facility, the Connacht Tribune reports.
The application will include an Environmental Impact Statement for the 500-acre forest site at Palmerstown and Toberroe in Derrydonnell.
The Irish newspaper said Apple is planning a single-storey data centre building measuring more than 263,000 square feet and a single-storey logistics and administration building measuring 56,000 sq ft.
A maintenance building measuring 3,100 sq ft will also be built on-site.
The iPhone 6 carrier will include two small ‘fibre huts’, a security hut, ESB substation and 18 standby generators to keep the data centre running in case of power surge.
The site will also include wastewater treatment plants and rainwater harvesting.
