Alcatel-Lucent and Transtelecom JSC, a service provider in Kazakhstan, have signed a $100m agreement to modernise the telecommunication network of Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ), the state-owned railway and the vital corridor for the country.
Under the agreement, Alcatel-Lucent will deliver its services to build a WAN infrastructure that will enable the delivery of new services and upgrade passenger and cargo traffic handling capabilities. The implementation of the project will enhance the reliability of the signalling system of KTZ.
The company said that the enhanced performance of the railway network can help strengthen the Kazakh economy and increase the exports on the international market, based on the need to move various cargos over long distances. Once the project is completed, the lengths of the fiber-optic based network will be extended by 4,000 km.
Alcatel-Lucent will provide Kazakh Railways with an integrated service based on its optical multi-service transport service and its IP/MPLS portfolio. Kazakh Railways will leverage Alcatel-Lucent’s services which includes project management and delivery, design, installation, application and software integration, multivendor maintenance and the training of Transtelecom specialists.
The modernised network will improve track maintenance, allowing for remote monitoring and diagnosis, reducing the need for specialists at remote sites, the company said.
Alexander Tikhonov, head of Alcatel-Lucent business in CIS, said: “Through this project, Alcatel-Lucent is able to directly contribute to the deployment of the most modern telecommunications infrastructure in Kazakhstan. We will leverage our experience in similar deployments and provide an overall project management to allow Transtelecom JSC to efficiently support critical communications.”
