Cray Computer Corp is to establish a co-operative hardware and software relationship with Thinking Machines Corp, the aim of which will be to deliver a demonstration Cray-3 system and a Thinking Machines CM-5 system to the National Center of Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado in first quarter 1993. Delivery of the CM-5 system is contingent on availability of fiscal 1993 Federal Computing Facilities funding for the Boulder lab. While details of the project are still subject to agreement between the parties, Cray Computer sees a six- to 12-month evaluation and development project that addresses optimal interconnection of the two machines for work on large meteorological applications – during which Cray does not expect to be paid.
