Connected cars cruise into Geneva Motor Show 2016 with Ford, Hyundai & Peugeot

List: 5 driving technologies that are shaping the next generation of transportation.

The 86th edition of the Geneva Motor Show is going to be hosted in the Swiss city between March 1 and 13, with the first two days of the event being dedicated to the press. Doors will be open to the wider public in the following days.

CBR lists five smart car technologies that will be showcased at the event in the vehicle-to-everything (V2X) age.



Peugeot Traveller i-Lab: connected V2I in 3D

The carmaker calls it the "VIP shuttle 3.0". The Traveller i-Lab includes Peugeot’s connected 3D navigation system that informs the driver in real time about traffic along the pre-selected route and also information regarding the passenger’s agenda.

The system can be controlled by voice or via the car’s cockpit touchscreen.

The business class SUV has also been fitted with extra connectivity including a WiFi hotspot, cloud access and Bluetooth that together with charging docks, will enable the use of several devices in the car including virtual reality sets.

Peugeot has also embedded smart technology into the car that can read road signs, while driver inattention monitoring devices will keep the driver’s eyes on the road at all times.

The car has also been designed to have the four individual seats arranged opposite one another around a 32" touch tablet, with the capacitive touchscreen.

During the concept stage, Peugeot also looked into including a large touch screen worktop which passengers could use during meetings or for entertainment. The ‘tablet’ would function like an airplane-removable table that is stored on the side of the seat.



Kia: driverless cars are coming

Most auto makers have now entered the driverless car race, and Kia is set to make some announcements around this space at the Geneva Motor Show this week.

The company will be unveiling its Drivewise technology which combines some of its connected technology with automated functions.

Similarly to Tesla’s technology, Kia’s Drivewise will be able to drive autonomously by tracking the vehicles in from of the car.

The technology will also allow cars to be parked without a driver inside the car. The solution, already rolled out by Tesla last year, proved populate with its customers as parking was made easier in tighter spaces such as small garages.

Kia has said that is expects to have a fully working autonomous vehicle by 2030.



Ford Kuga: Keyless and smartly connected with SYNC3

Ford, whose CEO has recently said is no longer just a car maker, but a smart mobility and auto company, will be introducing its Kuga model in Europe.

The vehicle will use the company’s latest infotainment system, SYNC3. The technology will also be introduced into the Mondeo and Galaxy models at a later stage.

SYNC 3 allows drivers to control audio, navigation, and climate functions plus connected smartphones using voice commands and/or by interacting with a touchscreen embedded on the car’s cockpit.

The Kuga will come with 17, 18 or 19-inch wheels, and Ford’s Adaptive Front Lighting. The smart system is able to understand the environment outside the car and adjust the headlights intensity to help the driver see the road. At the same time it can match the speed of the car in-front of the Kuga and keep a safe distance.

In addition, the car will have a rear camera, and Ford’s Active Park Assist will steer the vehicle into the right position when parking. Ford‘s key-free system is also expected to feature.

The technology lets the driver lock and unlock the car without having to take the car’s key of his/her pocket. Sensors around the car detect the presence of a ‘passive key’ and activate the locking mechanism accordingly.

Hyundai IONIQ: 3 cars, 1 smart infotainment system

Hyundai will not be revealing one but three cars the Geneva Motor Show. The IONIQ Hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid and Electric.

Despite their powering differences, all the three models will feature TomTom’s driving products, such as a real-time mapping solution, developed in partnership with Bosch.

On top of this, the eco cars will enable the driver to connect its infotainment system to Android Auto and/or Apple Car Play and control the entertainment system with their voice or via the cockpit’s touchscreen.

The vehicles will also include Hyundai’s Autonomous Emergency Braking technology, Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and Smart Adaptive Cruise Control.



Volvo V90: smart safety first

Volvo, the Swedish maker that is heavily looking into the automated and driverless spaces, will be unveiling the Volvo V90 expected to be priced around £30,000.

The company has mostly deployed smart security technology into the vehicle, including its Pilot Assist II. The technology monitors the distance between Volvo’s car and the car right in front of it, sending out alerts when the cars come too close together.

The V90 will also feature a lane keeping aid system that will alert the driver if he/she gets too close to the lane limits. Furthermore, it will have a system that monitors if the driver is being distracted or has fallen as sleep, a connected warning system and a speed limiter connected to a road sign recognition system.

Volvo has included its run-off road mitigation system, to monitor road position and adjust the steering accordingly if the system perceives that the car is about to leave the road.

Lastly, sensors and cameras will detect road obstacles, from pedestrians, cyclists and animals to other vehicles, which, in case of detecting something, will action a seatbelt pre-tensioning, warning lights and automatic braking.



Bugatti will be unveiling its most recent vehicle, the $2.5m Chiron.

In other news

Audi is set to launch its own smart TV app, the Audi Media TV, allowing users on any phone to watch live events in which the company takes part. The app will be available for Samsung, LG, Amazon Fire and Android T devices.

Aimed at marketing and sales teams, DS Brand will launch a "Virtual Garage" that uses VR to improve sales. Based on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, Dassault Systèmes’ "Virtual Garage" experience delivers 3D automotive sales and marketing materials, applications and event experiences that communicate emotional brand or product themes to their target audiences.

The luxury sports cars is also expected to see the unveiling of several models with a price range of £500,000 to £2 million. Bugatti, Maserati, Aston Martin, Bentley, McLaren and Lamborghini lead with some of the most expensive vehicles, but also the sexiest.
