IBM computer users have a new second hand hardware market at their disposal in the form of the Computer Users Exchange. It’s a members-only organisation for the aquisition and disposal of IBM and plug-compatible kit directly between members. Member’s requirements are held on a database that also lists prevailing market prices of second-hand hardware from System 38s to 308Xs. When the members’ requirements are matched up, the Exchange advises them of the availability and market prices of the hardware. Once a price has been agreed, the Exchange seals the deal by administering all the contractual and financial arrangements. There is a transaction fee charged to the vendors of the equipment which represents a percentage of the purchase price. Transport, warehousing and installation can be arranged at cost price. The membership fee is UKP350 a year and members get a bulletin with details of all equipment on offer, prices and trends. The Computer Users’ Exchange has a hot-line centre at its headquarters in Surbiton, Surrey and it already has a membership of 100 which it expects will grow to 250 in six months and 750 by next year.
