The research and production amalgamation NPO Programmprom of Russia has signed a 100m rouble contract with the Russian Ministry of the Defence Industry to develop a computer network which will be used to control the disarmament of the Russian Navy. Users of the network will be connected using Intelsat. G Bobkov, Programmprom chief engineer, says the network will probably be Ethernet-based and will be supplied by 3Com Corp. The hardware will be 80286 and 80386 processors bought from the Singapore arm of Challenger Inc, which has previous experience of business with Programmprom. The pilot stage of the project is to be completed in March this year.
