One of IBM’s problems with the RS/6000 is that, almost more than any other major family, third parties are going to flock to offer cheaper and better peripherals for it than the ones that IBM offers, at the cost of IBM’s hardware revenues. Irvine, California-based CMS Enhancements Inc has come out with a Presidential Series K380S1-6000N fixed disk subsystem for the RS/6000’s 3.5 half-height bay. It stores 380Mb with an average access time of 11.5mS; there is no SCSI adaptor or cable because it uses the IBM SCSI host adaptor included with the workstation. The K380S1-6000N is priced to retail at $5,200 and is out now in the US.
