VMware is beta testing a database-as-a-service offering, dubbed vCloud Air SQL, which will initially focus on test and development scenarios.
The new service will reportedly run on SQL Server 2008 R2 & 2012 and will bring disaster recovery options for user’s on-premise databases to Virtzilla’s vCloud Air.
The service will also have the capability to handle non-critical workloads and production apps, according to VMware documents sighted by The Register.
SQL server can currently run on VMware’s vCloud Air service in only self-provisioning mode. VMware is planning to expand its cloudy service catalog by testing the full as-a-service offering.
The company searched for beta testers in early April, but those who intended to participate the crash test dummy were warned that their installed databases will not withstand the service’s transformation to general availability.
Vmware is also urging its service provider customers to test a new version 8.0 of vCloud Director.
Last month, VMware launched two new open source projects to help enterprise developers build, deploy and manage cloud-native applications securely.
