Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Gaikai, the interactive cloud-based gaming company for $380m.

As the maker of PlayStation game consoles plans to expand cloud- based entertainment services, the acquisition is expected to help SCE to establish a new cloud service to offer users with interactive entertainment experiences.

Sony Computer Entertainment president and Group CEO Andrew House said by combining Gaikai’s resources including its technological and engineering strengths with SCE’s game platform knowledge and experience, SCE will provide users with an enhanced cloud entertainment experiences.

"SCE will deliver a world-class cloud-streaming service that allows users to instantly enjoy a broad array of content ranging from immersive core games with rich graphics to casual content anytime, anywhere on a variety of internet-connected devices," House said.

The acquisition will help SCE expand its network business by taking advantage of Gaikai’s technology and infrastructure including data centres and key partners worldwide.

Gaikai was set up in 2008 and offers cloud-based game service which allows users to play high-end games by streaming them to a wide variety of devices via the internet.

The transaction is subject to certain regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions and is scheduled to be completed by the end of August 2012.
