NTT will not compete directly with public cloud vendors such as Amazon and Microsoft, claims new CEO Tesuya Shoji.
Asked at a press conference what NTT planned to do to increase its presence in the public cloud sphere, Shoji explained that NTT would differentiate by offering a broad portfolio of cloud and other services.
"We have been working on this question for a long time; in reality, customers have a combination of either private network or private cloud and then public cloud that they have to use altogether," said Shoji.
"We have established an environment so that the more hybrid cloud or the public cloud that Amazon and Microsoft have been providing can be used in combination with a private cloud.
"We want to continue to provide solutions so that there can be a combination of use for global secure private cloud and also the various kinds of more public cloud or internet type cloud that have been rolled out for businesses in various countries."
Amazon Web Services is currently the clear market leader in public cloud, with Amazon CTO Werner Vogels claiming in April that it has "more than 5 times the compute capacity than all the other 14 cloud providers combined."
"Because Amazon is so overwhelmingly strong we are often asked, as other providers are, how we are going to differentiate versus them," Motoo Tanaka, Senior Vice President of Cloud Services, added.
"As Mr. Shoji mentioned, it is not conceivable for us to compete versus Amazon simply on public cloud.
"In most products we sell, it is a requirement that we provide a combination of solutions such as public cloud, ICT, network, private cloud and security. Together, with infrastructure, we would like to provide a combination of these solutions.
"What we want to do is not just sell cloud only but sell cloud in combination with other peripheral services, and public cloud will be just one thing that is available from us."
Shoji became CEO of the Japanese networking company in June.
