Microsoft has introduced an enhanced Windows HPC Server 2008 R2, a comprehensive and integrated high-performance computing (HPC) offering that offers new capabilities for analysis and can be used for technical computing workloads in business, academia and government.
The company said that the enhanced Windows HPC Server clusters to run a variety of applications and its performance equals that of Linux, and is 32% to 51% less expensive than Linux-based HPC systems over five years.
The Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 reduces calculation time of complex spreadsheets, and allows customers to turn spare processor cycles on Windows 7-based workstations into desktop compute clouds that expand the capacity of Windows HPC Server clusters.
IDC Earl Joseph said that companies and products, like the new Windows HPC Server 2008 R2, help customers take advantage of new technology advances, such as HPC clusters, GPUs, cloud computing and multicore processors.
