Microsoft is splashing the cash to bring cloud security firm Adallom into its operations.
The firm which offers data loss prevention and reporting to cloud storage services is said to have been acquired for $250 million.
Adallom’s services give users the ability to see who has accesses what data and to set policies in order to control access. Its software is used for monitoring cloud-based services such as Dropbox, Google Apps, AWS, Box and Salesforce.
The move comes as Microsoft continues its cloud push, the acquisition of the start-up will help to strengthen the identity side of its cloud offerings, with this being a key element of cloud security in order to protect access to applications and data.
Microsoft said the acquisition: "expands on Microsoft’s existing identity assets, and delivers a cloud access security broker, to give customers visibility and control over application access as well as their critical company data stored across cloud services."
Offering more cloud security is likely to be greeted positively and public moves like this will help to reassure users that cloud is safe and secure.
