MariaDB has announced the Spring 2015 release of MariaDB Enterprise, which will include new scalability and security capabilities.

Research from Wikibon has predicted that the Big Data database market will reach $4.5 billion in 2017, which represents a large rise from $2.7bn in 2014. It is expected that SQP will represent 64% of the database market.

Other forecasts have shown that revenue for open-source databases will reach close to $3bn in 2016.

Nik Rouda, Senior Analyst at ESG for Big Data, Analytics and Data Management, said: "Businesses continue to struggle with the endless growth of traditional databases in terms of size, number, and cost, and are looking for alternatives to better meet the enterprise requirements of new SaaS applications."

The MariaDB Enterprise is provided as a subscription and includes curated and hardened server binaries which are based on MariaDB’s community server.

Included are a number of tools, connectors and subscription serves.

Also on offer is an expanded choice of supported operating systems which includes, RHEL 7.1, SLES 12 and Ubuntu 14.04 binaries for the IBM POWER8 architecture.

MariaDB MaxScale is an optional add-on for the Enterprise subscription. This is a configurable database proxy platform for scalability and database security.

In the Spring 2015 release the new capabilities which are added includes security protection against SQL injection attacks and enhanced scalability via-schema-based sharding and binlog router.
