IBM has opened a new data centre designed to support new compute models such as cloud computing, to help clients operate smarter businesses, organisations and cities.
IBM said that the new data centre will ultimately total 100,000 square feet at its research triangle park campus and is part of a $362m investment by the company to build the new data centre in North Carolina.
The data centre uses advanced software virtualisation technologies that enable access to information and services from any device. The facility conserves energy resources by saving cost and speeding services deployment through a smart management approach that links equipment, building systems and data centre operations, the company claims.
According to IBM, the attributes of the new data centre include smarter data centre management with thousands of sensors, connecting IT equipment, data centre and building automation systems; free cooling using the outside air to cool the data centre; and hosts smart business cloud computing offerings.
In addition, the design/build method called IBM Enterprise Modular Data Center (IBM EMDC) enables the company to scale capacity to meet demand by adding future space, power and cooling to the data centre.
