IBM has completed the acquition of Aspera, which develops technology to transfer files at maximum speed, regardless of file size, transfer distance and network conditions.
Aspera is claimed to transfer a 24GB file halfway across the globe in about 30 seconds using its patented fasp protocol.
The data transfer firm’s technology is claimed to make cloud computing faster, predictable and cheap for Big Data transfers like the enterprise storage, sharing virtual images or bursting to the cloud for increased computing capacity.
Following the transaction, Aspera’s fasp technology will be combined with IBM’s SoftLayer cloud infrastructure.
The integration will support IBM’s Smarter Commerce programme by enabling businesses to speed up their digital supply chains, while expanding IBM’s Managed File Transfer capabilities to help enterprises in gain control and oversight of their data transfers.
IBM Industry Cloud Solutions GM Craig Hayman said Aspera solves critical challenges at the intersection of two of the most influential trends driving business today – Big Data and cloud computing.
"With this acquisition, IBM will help our customers more effectively and efficiently move large files to and from the cloud and within the enterprise to where individuals can extract real business insights from that data," Hayman added.
