According to new research by IDG Connect, hybrid strategies have become the new norm.

Commisioned by Interxion, the research shows that in the mid to long term future, the preferred infrastructure strategy will be hybrid.

Not only is this likely to be the future, but research also shows that 45% of enterprises are already running hybrid IT solutions.

Respondents from midsized and large enterprises showed that many are running private cloud environments (50%) with 38% using public cloud services. However, this is likely to change as 51% indicated that they expect to move more workloads to public cloud in the next 5 years.

Over half of respondents (53%) indicated that data centres will remain a significant component of how organisations manage sensitive and important data.

The research showed that high levels of connectivity between these compute resources would likely be a catalyst for further migration to the cloud. However, a key barrier to cloud adoption was yet again highlighted as being security concerns (53%).

Network performance was highlighted by 47% as a concern.

If these challenges were overcome then companies stated that they would increase their workloads in the cloud from 24% to 42%. For 41% of respondents, the intention to bypass the Internet and opt for enterprise-grade solutions is being considered.

Ian McVey, Director for Enterprise and Systems Integrators Segments at Interxion, said: "This research demonstrates to us that enterprises are already well into their cloud adoption journeys, and that the next wave of cloud migration is around the corner."

"The number of enterprises using direct connect services will further accelerate cloud adoption. All of this only confirms that the new IT reality is hybrid."
