It has been confirmed that Huawei will not be following Microsoft by acquiring any smartphone manufacturers, such as HTC or Blackberry.

Previous comments from analysts and Huawei staff have suggested that the Chinese tech giant, which has a small share of the smartphone market, may acquire phone makers such as HTC due to the Taiwanese manufacturer’s profit margin nearing collapse in the wake of competition from Apple and Samsung.

Huawei’s growing telecoms equipment business has put it in a strong financial position, but it will not be considering a bid for HTC, or any other smartphone manufacturer.

Chen Lifang, a member of Huawei’s executive board, said: "No, we have not considered it. We want to rely on ourselves. In manufacturing mobile phones we have made very good progress."

She also commented that previous comments from Richard Yu, Huawei’s smartphone chief, that implied the company may seek growth through acquisitions had been misunderstood because of a language barrier.

Microsoft’s recent £4.6bn acquisition of Nokia’s struggling mobile phone business suggested that other tech giants may follow suit.

HTC continues to struggle as a record loss is predicted for its third quarter, despite a new high profile media campaign. Profits were as high as £100m a year ago, with revenues predicted to dip by as much as 30% this year.

Despite not acquiring any manufacturers, Huawei is aiming to increase awareness of its brand with the launch of its new flagship handset, the Ascend P6.

Chen also rejected any suggestion of an approach for BlackBerry, after it went up for sale.

Huawei has established close links to the UK Government, as it invested £1.3bn in its UK operation and creation of hundred of hi-tech jobs.

The Chinese tech giant has embarked on another UK partnership by furthering its nine-year relationship with ARM, the Cambridge-based microchip designer.

Huawei has signed an architecture licensing deal with ARM to enable it to design its own microprocessor cores. The new ARMv8 licence allows Huawei to incorporate ARM’s technology in more products in areas like networking and cloud computing, the company said.
