Google has made a direct investment in AppScale Systems, an open source implementation of its application platform, Google App Engine to drive compatibility.
Google Cloud Platform global head of solutions Miles Ward said the company’s direct investment, in the form of contributing engineers, is intended to drive compatibility and interoperability between AppScale and App Engine.
"Today, AppScale exposes a subset of the 1.8 App Engine API, while the current version of App Engine is 1.9. We’re working with AppScale engineers and the broader community to add compatibility with App Engine 1.9, including Versions and Modules."
Google App Engine is a Platform as a Service (PaaS) offering for building and running applications on the company’s infrastructure.
AppScale, which is an open source implementation of Google’s App Engine platform, lets developers to quickly develop web and mobile applications using the de facto standard, enterprise-tested and validated App Engine APIs.
Developers can run the apps on any cloud either public or private. AppScale Systems said the latest collaboration will allow customers to use the planetary scale of Google Cloud Platform and the flexibility of open source AppScale.
